For lovers of nature and coastal charm, the Golden Hill County Park walk offers one of the most scenic routes on the Isle of Wight.

This 4.8-mile circular walk takes you on a journey through the Island’s stunning countryside, along the Western Yar and the coast, providing breathtaking views.

Starting at the Golden Hill County Park car park, located off the main Yarmouth to Freshwater road, the walk is easily accessible for both Islanders and visitors.

The route is largely level, making it a suitable option for walkers of all abilities, with families, solo hikers and dog walkers finding the trail welcoming.

The initial part of the walk circles the historic Golden Hill Fort, an impressive Victorian-era defensive barracks which became a headquarters during the Second World War.

As you pass by you will be treated to sweeping views of Afton Down and the winding Yar Estuary.

At a path junction, go left down the hill F15 to Longhalves, before turning left again at the tarmac path F17, then F66, to reach a road bend. Carefully cross into Church Place.

A popular stop is The Red Lion pub in Freshwater, just after Church Place.

This traditional country pub is known for its welcoming atmosphere, serving a variety of ales, wines, and meals from a seasonally changing menu.

Continuing just after The Red Lion, turn left by the church onto F1 Freshwater Way, on a gated route along tracks and through woodland alongside the Western Yar to emerge at Gasworks Lane.

At a bend in the road, head right onto the coastal path, taking a shoreside route towards Fort Victoria Country Park.

Here, walkers can enjoy a meal or snack at Cafe Verdi, located within the fort.

Known for its cakes and hot meals, this cafe caters to four-legged friends with doggy ice cream.

The Boathouse, another beachside cafe near Fort Victoria, offers unmatched views across the Solent and beyond, making it an ideal spot for a light refreshment or to soak up the beauty of the surroundings.

Continue past the fort near the shore and find a woodland path and a signed nature trail/coast path.

The walk culminates as you make your way through woodland paths and nature trails.
