An Isle of Wight man denies seriously injuring a one-year-old in an alleged assault earlier this year.
Dean Clack, of Avenue Road, Freshwater, attended the IW Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, October 1.
Mr Clack is accused of causing a left-side haemorrhage, red marks around the child's neck and bruising, on May 21 this year.
The 37-year-old pleaded not guilty to causing assault, ill-treatment, neglect or abandonment of a child or young person to cause unnecessary suffering or injury.
He denied a second charge of wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
Magistrates said the case was outside of their sentencing guidelines due to the seriousness of the allegations.
Mr Clack was granted unconditional bail and will appear before a crown court judge on November 11.
