Isle of Wight flood alert extended after overnight rain

The Environment Agency reports that the water level in the Eastern Yar is slowly rising and, from 1pm today (Monday, September 30), minor flooding could affect areas around Alverstone.

In Sandown, a “small amount of water” could affect Gold Links Road and Morton Common, although the impacts are not anticipated until later this evening.

The flood alert affected area (Image: Environment Agency) At Alverstone, the river should peak at around 7pm, while at Sandown, it is not expected until 8am tomorrow (Tuesday, October 1).

In the last 16 hours, a total of 34mm of rainfall was recorded at Wroxall.

Property flooding is not predicted, the Environment Agency said.

The rain is forecast to clear by lunchtime, with tomorrow supposed to be much dryer, with just 10mm of rain forecast to fall in the East Wight area.

The rest of the week should remain relatively dry.

The Environment Agency said the Bembridge sluice has been checked, and it is operating normally.

A spokesperson added: “We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages. 

“Please avoid walking or driving through flood water.”

The flood alert will be removed or updated by 6pm tomorrow.
