FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a fire at the Isle of Wight’s household waste and recycling centre at Lynnbottom this evening (Sunday).

The local authority says the blaze has broken out in two of the large open skips for electronics and furniture.

Firefighters are in attendance and the council says the fire is under control.

No injuries have been reported and the fire happened while the site was closed to the public.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We hope to open at 10am tomorrow (Monday), subject to a safety and damage assessment.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and will issue updates when available, including guidance for anyone who had bookings.

“We would like to thank the fire service for their prompt action in containing this incident.”

UPDATE:

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) said at the height of the incident, crews from Newport, Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor were all in attendance.

The incident has now been scaled-down.

The fire service told the County Press the blaze initially broke out in three large bins but has since been contained into two.

A pair of bins containing electrical, metal and general waste have been moved to a safe area for a controlled burn and firefighters will "keep an eye on it overnight".

Police officers also attended and a hard closure of Briddlesford Road is in effect until the morning.

HIWFRS says it doesn’t know the cause of the fire at this stage.
