An Isle of Wight man says it is “a lesson learnt” after receiving a hefty fine and a driving disqualification for drug driving.

Robbie Burrows, of Wintergreen Gardens, Newport, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 20, and pleaded guilty to drug driving.

Lauren McConnell, prosecuting, said police stopped the 33-year-old driving on Fairlee Road in a Citroen Berlingo at 4.40pm on March 30.

Ms McConnell told the court Burrows informed police he had smoked cannabis the night before.

A positive roadside DrugWipe test followed, and Burrows was arrested, the court heard.

Burrows was more than three times over the legal THC (a derivative of cannabis) limit.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said his client had only had a small amount of cannabis the night before, and police had noted no suggestion of bad driving.

Mr Vincent told magistrates Burrows “does not drink or have a social life as such” and mostly spends his time at work or with his family.

Burrows, who is a self-employed carpenter, has no previous convictions.

Mr Vincent said his client wanted the court to know that “since the day in question, he has not touched cannabis or anything else. It is a lesson learnt.”

Magistrates handed Burrows a 12-month driving disqualification and ordered him to pay a £640 fine, a £256 surcharge and £85 in costs.
