An Isle of Wight woman repeatedly prank-called police to tell them she was going to “kill herself” before hanging up and laughing at them.

Jade Sandells, of Esplanade, Ryde, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 20.

The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to causing wasteful employment of police and persistently making use of the public electronic communication network to cause annoyance, inconvenience or anxiety.

Lauren McConnell, prosecuting, said Sandells called 999 at 12.45am on June 6 to inform police she “intended to kill herself.”

Ms McConnell told the court that a member of the public also called police to tell them they could see two females – one of which was Sandells – at the bottom of Union Street in Ryde calling police, pretending to cry and hanging up, before laughing and calling police again.

The court heard that the member of the public overheard Sandells saying “I can’t believe they fell for it.”

Ms McConnell said Sandells committed the offences whilst subject to a community order and has a history of nuisance calls to the police.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said included in the police report were references to his client making genuine calls to police.

Magistrates agreed to a pre-sentence report and adjourned the case to November 15.
