THE controversial Isle of Wight school places consultation has now officially gone live, with parents invited to have their say.

The Isle of Wight Council has today (Friday, September 20) launched a major consultation to "address the high number of surplus school places" in the Island's primary schools.

Some of the proposals include the potential closure of six primary schools, namely Arreton CE, Oakfield CE, Brading CE, Cowes, Wroxall and Godshill.

Additionally, the council is looking to expand specialist provision for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) — "repurposing schools identified for closure wherever possible".

"This is a unique opportunity for you to share your views on proposals aimed at raising educational standards across the Island," the council adds.

"Your input is crucial in shaping these decisions."

On Thursday last week (September 12), the council's Cabinet decided to go ahead with the consultation, and that the six named schools were targets for closure.

The Cabinet approved recommendations within its own School Place Planning report.

The council said pupils at closed schools would be able to join Gurnard, Barton, Greenmount, St Mary's Catholic, The Bay CE, St Helens, St Francis or Niton primary schools.

They also say the reduction in places is necessary to improve the quality of the Island's education and ensure the financial stability of schools and families.

In response, several protests have already been held by parents of schools targeted, opposing such moves.

There will be a series of school area meetings, starting next week, which is aimed to give the public the chance to hear the council's proposals and to ask officers questions.

They will be held at the following:

  • Cowes Primary School — Monday, September 23, 5.30pm-7pm;
  • Arreton CE Primary School — Wednesday, September 25, 5.30pm-7pm;
  • Oakfield Primary School — Thursday, September 26, 5.30pm-7pm;
  • Wroxall Primary School — Monday, September 30, 5.30pm-7pm;
  • Godshill Primary School — Wednesday, October 2, 5.30pm-7pm;
  • Brading Primary School — Thursday, October 3, 5.30pm-7pm.

The consultation will run until Friday, November 1.
