An Isle of Wight care home has recently been bustling with activities, holding a Summer Party and a celebration for National Dog Day.

Residents, along with their families, friends and staff, at Old Charlton House in Cowes gathered in the garden to enjoy a Country and Western-themed party.

Attendees donned glittery red Stetson hats, and a live performance by singer Megan Long Mackney got everyone involved.

The party also introduced residents to a new experience – the magic of the piñata.

While some were hesitant to break open the colourful creation, Elena, the chef’s four-year-old daughter, eagerly showed them how it was done!

Debbie Webb, activities coordinator, said: “It was brilliant to see so many members of the Old Charlton family coming together and having fun.

“It’s always a privilege to witness the joy and happiness of the residents, and we thank all of the friends, family and staff for their company”.

Following the Summer Party's success, residents celebrated National Dog Day with special visits from ten well-behaved and friendly dogs.

A call for furry volunteers had gone out on Facebook in July, and, sure enough, dogs from across the Island visited the care home throughout the day.

Sadly, when people have to leave their homes and enter the next chapter of their lives in a care home, they lose that connection with animals.

Many expressed their appreciation for the experience, with resident Marilyn saying: “The effect it had on everyone was wonderful. They were smiling, laughing, and I think the dogs enjoyed themselves too.”

“They have no idea just how important a role they have played in bringing positivity, happiness and joy to our residents.

“As soon as we entered each room, their gaze focussed on the dogs, and their immediate reaction was to smile. The residents had an absolute ball, and it was a brilliant day”.
