One of New Zealand’s biggest musical acts swapped stadiums for Strings when they performed on the Isle of Wight last week.
More used to stadiums of 20,000 and upwards, Six60 travelled from Down Under to play at Newport’s 300 capacity venue over the weekend.
Kiwis from as far as Chichester, Leeds and even Scotland flocked to the Island to catch the Don’t Forget Your Roots group on their 2024 Grassroots tour, which sees them play much smaller venues than they usually would.
The UK leg of the tour also features performances in Bristol, London, Edinburgh and Manchester.
At the Strings concert, Matiu Walters, Ji Fraser, Chris Mac and Marlon Gerbes asked how many in the audience were from New Zealand, to be met with huge cheer from the almost sold out crowd.
During Six60’s final song, lead singer Matiu sang part of it in the Māori language.
The band regularly sell out stadiums in their home country and in 2021, performed to 50,000 fans at the first ever concert at Auckland’s Eden Park Stadium.
All four of Six60’s studio albums have peaked at number one in the New Zealand charts and their live Grassroots Album got to number two.
During their 90 minute set, the band had the audience singing every word of every song including Before You Leave, The Greatest and Rolling Stone.
On Instagram after the performance, Strings Bar and Venue said: “One of the best shows we’ve seen at Strings.
“For a band of this magnitude to play grassroots venues such ours makes a huge difference.”
