AN ISLE of Wight drink driver was caught after pulling out of a junction in front of police, causing officers to brake.

Thomas Augustus, of Hillcrest Road, Rookley, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday, September 10.

The 18-year-old admitted drink driving at Blackwater Hollow, in Newport, on August 24.

Prosecutor, Lauren Stone, said police were travelling along Blackwater Road at around 4.30am.

She said they noticed a Renault Clio at a side junction which pulled out rather than stopping, causing officers to brake.

Ms Stone said the vehicle’s driver, Augustus, apologised for not stopping at the give-way and an empty pack of beers was found in his car.

Police noted he seemed nervous and he registered a breath-alcohol reading of 59 when the legal limit is 35.

Augustus, representing himself, said he made a very silly error, was very sorry and it wouldn’t happen again.

He told magistrates he was in full-time education, working part time, and didn’t realise he would be over the limit when he was driving home after a shift.

Augustus was fined £120 and disqualified from driving for 16 months.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge.
