An Isle of Wight school has been given an outstanding Ofsted rating.

Newport's Nine Acres Primary School received outstanding ratings in all of the government department's 'overall effectiveness' inspection categories from quality of education and personal development to early years provision and leadership and management.

The school inspectors started the report with the words: "Pupils blossom at Nine Acres."

Inspectors observed children "unquestionably" meet Nine Acres' "aspirational values" - being articulate, passionate, persuasive and positively influencing the world.

They also lauded the school's aim for all pupils to excel, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Features singled out for special praise included Nine Acres' "expertly delivered curriculum", its investment in staff training and staff members' "strong subject knowledge".

The report devoted an entire paragraph to the school's reading provision.  Inspectors described the school as being "awash" with "quiet reading areas" providing access to well chosen texts.

They commended the success of staff in making sure Reception Year and key stage one pupils learn phonics rapidly and soundly.

Children are said to develop a high degree of reading competence.

Inspectors also highlighted pupils' politeness, courteousness, care and respect which they said gives the school an "intensively positive atmosphere".

The report ends with acclaim for Nine Acres' leadership which is described as "highly effective" and aspiring to be continually better.

A spokesperson for the school said: "This exceptional rating is a significant accolade for the school and the Isle of Wight community, highlighting the school as a centre of educational excellence."
