The Isle of Wight has been included in a heat health alert as warmer temperatures make a return.

Issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office, the yellow alert is in place from 1am tomorrow morning (August 28) to 9am on Thursday, August 29.

Although unlikely to impact most people, the alert warns heat could affect those who are particularly vulnerable, including the elderly and young children.

Parts of the Island are likely to see temperatures of 23C plus tomorrow, according to the Met Office.

The UKHSA said minor impacts are probable across the health and social care sector, including:

  • Increased use of healthcare services by the vulnerable population.
  • Increase in risk of mortality amongst vulnerable individuals and increased potential for indoor environments to become very warm.

To stay cool in the heat, the Isle of Wight Council has issued some tips.

These include staying out of the sun, staying in the shade and wearing a sunhat.

Islanders are also advised to keep their home as cool as possible. Shading windows and shutting them during the day and only opening them when it is cooler at night may help, the council said.

You should also stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and don’t forget to wear sun cream.

If you or someone else feels unwell with a high temperature during hot weather, it may be heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
