THE ANNUAL Cowes Pram Race is back this morning (Sunday) – raising money for charity.

The family-friendly event, which kicks off at 11am and starts at the Painter’s Arms in Cowes, is in aid of MacMillan.

Visitors are treated to a full day of entertainment, with £1 going into the donation box for each item sold.

There is a raffle, prizes for the best prams, and DJ Sminky is performing from 5pm.

The pram race has been running more than 40 years and was started in the memory of Dorrie Simmons, a local woman who died of cancer.

In 1979 the regulars of the now defunct Britannia pub wanted to raise money for the Macmillan nurses who gave the family great support.

In more recent years, the pram race has started from outside The Painters Arms and has become more of a leisurely procession.

The word ‘pram’ is used loosely — previous entries have included dustbins, oil drums, deckchairs on wheels and a mini chassis — so long as it can be pushed.
