Mike Whittington, who served as a driver in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and later as standard bearer of the Island’s RAF Association, has died at the age of 83.

Mike, affectionately known as Dick, was born in a Shanklin nursing home in 1940, the eldest of three children to Jim and Muriel Whittington.

In 1948, the family settled in Wroxall, where Mike grew up.

Mike left school in 1955 to pursue an apprenticeship as a dental technician.

However, in 1958, he decided to change course and joined the RAF as a driver, obtaining his HGV licence.

During his 12 years of service, Mike was stationed in various locations, including Northern Ireland, Germany and Singapore.

In 1960, Mike met Bärbel in Berlin, and the couple married two years later.

Mike and Bärbel had three children together and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in June 2024.

After leaving the RAF, Mike and his family settled in Heinsberg, Germany, becoming an international long-distance HGV driver.

In 1975, Bärbel and the children moved to the Island while Mike continued his employment in Germany, often spending time with his family on weekends.

Mike later transitioned to a job with a company in Luxembourg, continuing to drive and deliver across Europe and the UK until his retirement in 2000.

Mike had many interests and hobbies.

He had a passion for the Western way of life, becoming an expert with a lasso and a key member of the Western Group on the Island.

He actively participated in re-enactments, researched the history of Texas Rangers and had his work published on the subject.

A talented leather craftsman, he created numerous items, including belts, bags and waistcoats, and even made most of his western saddle.

He devoted time to researching the Whittington family tree and was a staunch supporter of The Royal Air Force Association (RAFA), serving as secretary and standard bearer for the Island branch.

Mike remained connected with his RAF roots, regularly attending squadron and Changi reunions where he could reminisce with old friends.

Mike died on Sunday, August 11, and leaves his wife, three children, six grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, a brother and a sister.

Funeral arrangements to be announced.
