Three regulars of Swim the Wight have earned their STA open water swimming coach qualification.

Isle of Wight residents Wendy De Vallancey, Stefanie Oliphant, and Christina Conroy each decided earlier this year to tackle the STA level 2 open water swimming coaching qualification.

They completed the challenge under the watchful eye of the swim surgery on a chilly day on Hayling Island.

Their preparation included many hours of online classes, face-to-face study, and practice.

Having successfully passed, they are now equipped to join the coaching team at Swim the Wight CIC, facilitating more safe swimming sessions across the Isle of Wight.

Stefanie, also founder of Menopause IW, said: "A year ago I didn’t even think that sea swimming was a very good idea, but in that time I have gone from sea swimming adverse to a fully qualified open water swimming coach because of the support of Swim The Wight – it has changed my life and my menopause."

Christina said: "I was able to achieve my goal of swimming the Solent and raising money for the Wessex Cancer Trust in 2023.

"In light of this I wanted to give back and train as a coach for Swim the Wight to help others realise the fantastic benefits of open water swimming."

Since its inception in 2020, Swim the Wight has seen massive growth, now leading over 120 people into the sea weekly, all year round, on guided sea swimming sessions.

Participants attest that the support and training from the qualified coaches at Swim the Wight instils confidence, fosters camaraderie, and most importantly, makes it fun.

Regular swims offered by Swim the Wight further enhance physical and mental health, aid in alleviating menopausal symptoms, and serve as a platform to meet new like-minded friends.
