AN ISLE of Wight man was arrested as part of the police's fresh drive to target drug use and supply in the Sandown Bay area.

A 47-year-old man from Shanklin was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply, following a warrant to search his address yesterday (Monday).

During the search, as part of Op Antidote, officers seized a Samurai sword and an electronic device.

The suspect was later released on police bail, under investigation.

Op Antidote, an initiative by the Island's police force to target drug use and supply in the Bay, was launched yesterday (Monday, August 5), in response to communities in Shanklin, Ventnor, Sandown and Lake highlighting priority crime issues raised through its Lets Talk scheme.

South Wight Neighbourhoods Police Team is also targeting a reduction in anti-social behaviour and tackling anti-social vehicle crime and speeding.

The police aims to build on the successes of Op Spider and Op Sidlaw.

Op Spider, launched in 2021 to tackle anti-social behaviour — targeting young people in particular — has led to a 49 per cent reduction and is still ongoing.

Launched as a joint operation with Newport Neighbourhoods Police Team in July, Op Sidlaw has led to prosecutions for speeding, no insurance, defective vehicles and dangerous driving.

Officers have also issued warnings and seized vehicles, and are engaging with car clubs and driving communities, to educate drivers and prevent incidents.

A police spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Police, said: "We continue to patrol on foot and cycle every day, to ensure the Bay remains a safe place to live, work and visit.

"We will continue to support the most vulnerable, divert those who need guidance and relentlessly pursue those to look to cause harm in our communities."
