ISLE of Wight motorists are warning of a "dangerous driver" being pursued by police in Newport this afternoon (Sunday).

UPDATE: Police are now appealing for witnesses after the driver fled on foot.

Several County Press readers have alerted other motorists and pedestrians to a police chase taking place on Medina Way and Fairlee Road, among other routes.

Several vehicles have sustained damage, the County Press is told.

A red Citroen C3 has reportedly driven on the wrong side of the road and mounted the pavement to avoid police in pursuit, narrowly avoiding a bus and other motorists.

Among those to witness the incident was motorist Joe Davies, who told the County Press: “We were halfway down Fairlee, coming from the East Cowes roundabout towards Medina Leisure Centre.

“A bus beeped its horn suddenly, so I looked in my rear-view mirror and could see someone driving really fast.

“The vehicle had just overtaken the car behind me and had only just made it back onto our side of the road.

“They overtook us on our left, on the pavement, and swerved around the cars in front, then an unmarked police car came past us, followed by another with the boot open around ten seconds later.”
