A driver has been arrested after crashing into a tree and then fleeing from the scene on foot, police on the Isle of Wight have said.

A collision near Lynnbottom Tip resulted in the closure of Briddlesford Road this evening (Thursday), as previously reported.

The road has since reopened.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed a Ford Transit collided with a tree.

And, in what police said was an apparent audition for the Olympics, the driver ran away from the scene.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Fortunately police officers were not too far away and the runner didn't get too far either.

"After a convergence of roads policing, dogs, armed and response officers the driver DNF (did not finish) and was arrested by the dog unit."

A 28-year-old man from Wootton, arrested on suspicion of drink driving, remains in custody.

While there blood samples will be obtained and sent off for testing.

No injuries were reported in the crash.
