An Isle of Wight woman kicked a fire extinguisher off a wall, causing it to fall down a staircase, damage a fire alarm and collide with her friend who was ‘eating dinner’.

Mazie Bailey, of Atkinson Drive, Newport, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, July 23, and pleaded guilty to common assault and criminal damage.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said the 21-year-old, enraged, kicked a fire extinguisher off the wall of her supported living complex on June 18.

Ms Miller told the court that the extinguisher was thrown down the stairs, hitting and damaging a fire alarm and colliding with one of Bailey’s friends.

The court heard that the victim, who was standing at the foot of the staircase, believed that the fire extinguisher was aimed at her.

Bailey was subject to a community order at the time of the offence.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said his client has previously suffered childhood trauma and considerable domestic violence, which impacts her mental health.

Mr Vincent told the court that Bailey, in a ‘moment of anger and frustration’, kicked the fire extinguisher, causing it to come away from the wall and fall down the stairs, implying that the incident was an accident born out of rage.

It was ‘unfortunate’ that Bailey’s friend was at the bottom of the stairs, but the two have since made up, said Mr Vincent.

Reading out a victim impact statement, Mr Vincent said the situation upset Bailey’s friend, quoting: “I was eating my dinner, and then I was attacked by a fire extinguisher.”

A representative from the probation service said Bailey has been under supervision since February 27 and has been eager to engage with the support offered to her.

The court heard that alcohol is a trigger to Bailey’s offending, adding that she now knows her limits, and she ‘does not black out as often’.

Magistrates ordered a further pre-sentence report, adding to two other recent reports compiled after Bailey’s court appearances for theft and burglary, heard in both the magistrates and crown courts.

Bailey will return before magistrates on September 6 for sentencing and was granted unconditional bail.
