An Isle of Wight man must pay compensation after his ‘unsophisticated’ and ‘obvious’ vape shop theft was caught clearly on CCTV.

Matthew Lewendon, of no fixed abode, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, July 23.

The 53-year-old pleaded guilty to theft from a shop.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said the shoplifting was reported at Ape Vapes in St Thomas' Square in Ryde on June 1, and thanks to the 'extremely good CCTV', police were able to identify the suspect.

Ms Miller said the cameras caught Lewendon taking a vape, to the value of £90, from the shop counter and leaving without paying.

The device was not recovered.

The court was then briefly disrupted by the sound of ‘the real Slim Shady’ coming from Lewendon’s mobile phone in the dock.

Michael McGoldrick, defending, said the theft was ‘very unsophisticated’ and it was obvious what his client had done due to the clear CCTV.

A representative from the probation service said Lewendon’s offending is linked to his substance misuse and mental health issues following a family issue.

Magistrates ordered Lewendon to pay £90 compensation to the business owner and £85 court costs.
