Quick-thinking members of the public have helped to prevent a fire from breaking out in woodland next to a children's play park, off an Isle of Wight seafront.

It's suspected toilet roll was set alight and tossed into the woods, off Culver Parade, Sandown this afternoon (Monday).

Islander Gemma was with her family and children at the rainbow playground, at Sandham Gardens, when they spotted smoke emanating from the nearby woods, just before 5.30pm.

Upon inspection, a burnt and smouldering toilet roll was found in vegetation, next to Sandown Canoe Lake and Dinosaur Isle.

Gemma told the County Press a group of youths sat near the woods, "ran off" when she walked past.

She alerted staff at the Skynets attraction and handed over to them.

She said they used a watering can to douse the smouldering tissue, preventing it from spreading.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed to the County Press it was not called to the incident.
