Isle of Wight libraries are enticing young ones with this year's Summer Reading Challenge, entitled Marvellous Makers.

Kicking off for the holidays, the challenge is open in all 11 Island and community libraries, facilitated by volunteers.

Participation is free of charge and open to children four and above.

Young readers are rewarded with fun prizes like funky stickers as they whizz through books.

Complete six and a medal, certificate, and a chance to enter an additional competition awaits them.

Top ten performers score book tokens, museum free entry tickets, and free swimming passes at Medina and The Heights, thanks to 1Leisure.

They can enrol for Marvellous Makers any time during the holidays.

Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for libraries, said: "The annual Summer Reading Challenge is great fun, but it also plays an important part in keeping children’s literacy levels up over the summer, a time when they traditionally drop.

"At the heart of the challenge is the principal that children choose their own books, which helps them see reading as a pleasure.

"Any books count: fiction or non-fiction, easy or hard, old favourite or new author. Even struggling or reluctant readers can take part and receive a reward for reading — a great boost to their confidence."
