A Ventnor motorcyclist must pay a hefty fine after overtaking a police car and travelling almost twice the speed limit through an Isle of Wight village.
Daniel Knights, of Castle Close, Ventnor, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 23, and pleaded guilty to speeding - exceeding 30mph.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said a police patrol was on Main Road in Rookley on October 3, 2023, when Knights, riding a KTM motorcycle, overtook the vehicle travelling towards Godshill.
Ms Miller told the court that Knights overtook another vehicle before the police team put on their sirens and attempted to catch the motorcycle.
The court heard that, eventually, Knights was pulled over, and officers reported that he was travelling at a minimum speed of 58mph in the 30mph zone.
Knights, unrepresented, fully admitted the mistake to the magistrates and asked for leniency, given it was his first offence.
Magistrates handed Knights six penalty points – instead of a disqualification – and ordered him to pay a £576 fine.
He must also pay a £230 surcharge and £85 in costs to the court.
