AN ISLE of Wight drink driver has been banned from the road after being caught dropping off a passenger while more than twice the limit.

Lyam Ringer, of no fixed abode, formerly of Heath Road, Sandown, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday, July 23.

The 24-year-old admitted drink driving in Sandown, on June 16, and a further charge of breaching a conditional discharge.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, said police were alerted to a possible drink driver at around 3.20am.

She said the attention of officers was drawn to a red Toyota, being driven by Ringer, which they followed until it came to a stop on Halford Close.

Police saw Ringer exit the driver’s side of the vehicle and noted a smell of liquor, and when they challenged him, he told officers he had consumed a few beers throughout the night.

Ringer, who was carrying a passenger in his vehicle and dropped them off at an address, registered a breath-alcohol reading of 77 when the legal limit is 35.

Michael McGoldrick, defending, said Ringer was very open and honest, and accepted he had underlying alcohol issues.

He said he was in a low, dark place, and was living in his car at the time.

“He’s better than this, he knows he’s better than this, and hopefully he can get out of the hole he’s found himself in,” said Mr McGoldrick.

The court heard Ringer had spoken to Outreach since his arrest and referred himself to Inclusion.

Ringer was disqualified from driving for 20 months and fined £120.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge.
