A contractor, which operates in environmentally testing conditions, has been recognised with an award after refurbishing a popular landmark on the Isle of Wight.

Ryde Pier's refurbishment was recognised as the Industrial Category winner at the Painting and Decorating Association's (PDA) Premier Trophy Awards.

The award for the pier was presented to Jack Tighe Ltd, a nationwide contractor based in North Lincolnshire, at a ceremony held at Plaisterers’ Hall, London.

The awards fall on a landmark year for the PDA, which is celebrating its 130th anniversary and its 35th consecutive year of the Premier Trophy Awards.

PDA recognises the best in the painting and decorating trade, including industrial painters operating in challenging environmental conditions.

Assessing 88 entries overall, a panel of judges from the Institute for Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI) declared the Ryde Pier project exceptional.

They praised the health and safety standards maintained during refurbishment and predicted that the work done will stand the test of time.

The contractor, Jack Tighe Scunthorpe Ltd, also received a Very Highly Commended acknowledgement in the Industrial category for their refurbishment of a bridge at the Blackwall Tunnel, London.

PDA chief executive, Mr Ogilvie said: "This is a landmark year both for the PDA and the Premier Trophy Awards so our very special congratulations go to the team at Jack Tighe.

"These awards fly the flag for excellence in our sector and reflect the hard work, skill and dedication to quality that is required to create a flawless finish."
