YARMOUTH's iconic swing bridge is set to close for almost two months this autumn to allow major work to replace its entire deck.
The project, planned to get underway on September 23, will see Island Roads replace the deck in its entirety for the first time since 2009.
The work is planned to last up to eight weeks, during which the structure will be closed to all road traffic, with diversions via Wilmingham Lane and The Middle Road to be put in place.
However, pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the work.
Cyclists too will still be able to use the bridge during the works, as long as they dismount.
Island Roads is also working with Yarmouth Harbour Commission to minimise disruption to river traffic.
The work has been planned for outside the main holiday season, to minimise inconvenience, but also at a time of year when there is a reasonable chance of mild weather, which Island Roads say would be "helpful to the performance of some of the materials being used".
The project's manager, Nathaniel Saunders, said: “Though we are doing the work out of season, it is nevertheless inevitable there will be some inconvenience to river and road users, so we would like to thank them in advance for their understanding.
“It is important the bridge is kept in good order. The complete replacement of the deck should reduce the need for maintenance-related closures in the future.”
At 90m long Yar Swing Bridge is the Island’s second largest bridge — a seven-span structure comprising of steel main beams, with composite timber decking.
