The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of smoke issuing at the Rainbow Fish Bar takeaway on Avenue Road, Freshwater, just before 7pm tonight (Friday, July 19).

Two fire engines from Newport and Ryde and the police attended.

Customers were evacuated from the shop at a busy time of the evening for the takeaway. No one was injured.

A cordon was established around the scene and road blocks were put in place by the police.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to extinguish the small fire — believed to be caused either by a gas leak or an electrical fault.

An eyewitness at the nearby Vine Inn public house, just opposite the Rainbow Fish Bar, saw "a lot of commotion" and that a PCSO at the scene had said the fire had been caught "just in time".

She added the area "smelt like burnt toast for a while, so there was definitely a fire".

Other fire engines and an aerial ladder platform vehicle were also mobilised, but returned to station when the crews on scene established the scale of the fire, a fire service spokesperson said.

The roads reopened to traffic after an hour of their closure.
