Two Isle of Wight towns feature on a list of best and worst seaside holiday destinations in the UK, according to a consumer group.

Almost 5,000 Which? members were surveyed and the results suggest holidaymakers love unspoilt beaches, gorgeous scenery and peace and quiet, rather than crowded hot spots.

Of the 126 locations to feature, there are two from the Island - Ventnor and Shanklin.

Ventnor is the higher ranked of the two, coming 60th, with an overall destination score of 69 per cent.

The town's beaches are scored four out of five stars, while its seafront has been given three stars.

Both food and drink, and tourist attractions, were also rated three out of five.

Ventnor's scenery and peace and quiet both score highly with four out of five ratings, but shopping has been given a low rating of one.

There has been good news for the town recently, with the reopening of Leeson Road and Ventnor Fringe taking place.

Meanwhile, slightly lower on Which's list is Shanklin in 67th place.

With a 67 per cent rating, the town's beaches are given four out of five stars and the seafront has notched up three stars.

Food and drink and shopping are rated two out of five, and tourist attractions and scenery are given a three.

“While you may have your own favourite coastal spot, this year’s survey shows that it’s worth looking beyond the most famous resorts this summer, to the lesser-visited hidden gems in every corner of the UK.”
