Residents at an Isle of Wight care home have recently relived past sailing adventures when they embarked on a sailing trip off the coast of Cowes and East Cowes.

Despite fairly choppy waters and the boat travelling at high speeds – sending waves splashing over everyone on board – the trip was met with great enthusiasm from residents at Newport's Old Charlton House.

Pilot Ian remained dry in his cabin, but residents, clad in waterproof ponchos, got thoroughly drenched, adding to the adventure and fun of the day.

Some of the residents were sailors in their lives before Old Charlton, and the experience provided them with the opportunity to relive some of their past.

Made possible by charities Cowes Sailability and WetWheels, based in Hamble, the organisations provide specially adapted boats and trained volunteers, ensuring that even individuals with complex needs can have a rewarding sailing experience.

One resident, Jim, initially hesitant about the trip, shared his newfound enthusiasm afterwards, stating, “I had a wonderful time, it was fabulous, thank you to everybody who helped, and I really want to go again”.

Upon their return to Old Charlton House, residents changed into dry clothes, whilst the staff had to continue their shift in soggy clothes, with salt-covered skin and crispy hair!

Activities coordinator Debbie Webb expressed her gratitude, saying, “We like to ensure that all residents are offered as many opportunities as possible for life enrichment.

“We thank Cowes Sailability, in conjunction with WetWheels, for allowing our residents the opportunity to enjoy some time at sea”.
