A TEAM from the Isle of Wight has been chosen to take part in a new women's football tournament for islands in the Channel Isles next month.
The Cherry Godfrey Cup — named after sponsors, financial services company, Cherry Godfrey — will take place at the Springfield Stadium in Jersey, over August 23-24.
It is an event organisers plan to hold every two years, with the tournament allowing island players to compete against one another on a more regular basis.
Currently, their only regular tournament football is the biennial Island Games, which will next be hosted by the Orkneys next year.
"We're delighted to be hosting the inaugural Cherry Godfrey Cup at Springfield Stadium," said Jonathan Le Fondre, the Jersey Football Association's football services manager.
Cherry Godfrey, which offers financial services, has offices based on all four islands.
"It was clear from our discussions with Cherry Godfrey, they are extremely passionate about women's football in the islands, and the launch of this tournament next month will build upon the fantastic growth of the women's game," Le Fondre added.
The Isle of Man's women's team won bronze at last year's Island Games in Guernsey, with Jersey finishing fifth, Isle of Wight eighth and Guernsey ninth.
The semi-finals of the tournament will be held on Friday, 23 August, with the losers playing off for third place the following day.
