A man assaulted two people, smashed glasses and damaged bar equipment during a fight at an Isle of Wight pub.

Cayliam Sheen, of Elm Grove, Newport, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 9, for sentencing.

The 26-year-old previously pleaded guilty to assault by beating, common assault, criminal damage and obstructing/resisting a constable in the execution of duty.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said police were called to reports of an incident on the evening of December 7, 2023, at The Tap on Avenue Road in Sandown.

Ms Miller told the court that inside the venue a fight had ensued, which saw Sheen assault two people, smash beer glasses and damage a beer pump.

Once police arrived, Sheen resisted arrest, said Ms Miller.

Michael McGoldrick, defending, said his client is ‘incredibly apologetic’ and has been going through a challenging time for himself and his partner, who is heavily pregnant.

Mr McGoldrick said Sheen has been sober since and has not returned to the pub.

Unemployed, Sheen is concerned that an unpaid work requirement would hinder his chances at finding work, Mr McGoldrick told the court.

Magistrates handed Sheen a two-year community order to include 100 hours of unpaid work.

Sheen must also pay £100 compensation to one of his victims and £138 to The Tap.
