The Isle of Wight Festival doesn't end until the fireworks go off and this was never truer than after US rock band Green Day's triumphant set, on Sunday night.

Chants of 'one more song' rang out but sadly, it was not to be.

Leave 'em wanting more.

Green Day, who formed in California in 1987, barely stopped for breath during their two hour set at Seaclose Park.

They opened with The American Dream is Killing Me, from their latest album, Saviors.

Among those in the crowd were the boys from McFly, who had themselves played Main Stage, earlier in the day and who stood at the side of the stage, singing every word.

When Billie Joe Armstrong invited a member of the crowd on stage, they all pointed at Tom Fletcher, who was wearing a Green Day shirt. In the end, though, it was young Molly who won the coveted chance to join the band on stage, for Know Your Enemy.

As tens of thousands of festival-goers chanted her name, Molly jumped up and down, artfully took the microphone for a verse or two and had an all round marvellous time.

Green Day were the masters of their domain. They delivered ballads (Wake me Up When September Comes, Time of Your Life) and heavy rock (Basket Case, American Idiot and Holiday), complete with flame throwers, explosives and confetti.

If they said jump, we asked how high.

A giant blow-up hand holding a grenade signalled their iconic American Idiot album, while the early part of their set was punctuated by the arrival of a huge blow up plane, controlled by a 'bear' and a 'dog', dropping 'bombs' on the crowd.

Among those lucky enough to bag one were Simeon and Simon, from Bicester, Oxfordshire.

For many, the highlight of the weekend, Green Day had long been rumoured for the Isle of Wight Festival and in 2024, they not only arrived, but they delivered.

The night was certainly a highlight for Austin, 8, from Bognor, who found himself handed a pair of the band's drum sticks.

The Isle of Wight Festival always knows how to finish on a high and this year's finale soared higher than ever.
