A derelict building fire prompted an emergency response on the Isle of Wight during the early hours of this morning (Saturday, June 15).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) was called at 12.45am to reports of a building fire on Rew Street in Gurnard.

Multiple crews from across the Island were sent to the scene, including Cowes, Newport and the Ventnor water carrier.

The building and surrounding undergrowth were involved in the fire, with firefighters in breathing apparatus sets using hose reels to extinguish it.

Crews dampened down the scene, using thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no remaining hotspots before delivering community fire safety materials to neighbouring addresses.

A HIWFRS spokesperson said an area of 20m x 25x was affected.

Firefighters started to leave the scene at around 3am.
