Casualty flown to hospital by air ambulance after crash on Downs Road

UPDATE: One person has died and another was seriously injured following the major crash.

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance has airlifted a casualty from the scene.

Several roads around the area remain closed after the crash happened at around 11.20am.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service said: "We can confirm that we attended a road traffic accident on the downs earlier today and helicopter emergency medical service was also in attendance."

The Downs Road remains closed this afternoon and traffic is busy in the surrounding areas. 

Police described it as a serious collision.

It is understood two vehicles were involved.
