A FALKLANDS veteran from the Isle of Wight, who provides accommodation for homeless ex-forces members, has described the vandals who daubed a showroom car with the name 'Hitler' as "downright disrespectful scum".
Dale Hiller, co-owner of The Veteran pub and hotel on Ryde Esplanade, said he was "lost for words" after reading Wednesday's County Press story about a spree of vandalism to vehicles, theft and burglary which affected two Sandown businesses.
Leslies Hyundai, on College Close in Sandown, had a break-in at its valet bay, where cars are prepared for service.
There, seven vehicles were damaged, which included one which had the name 'Hitler' graffitied on it.
A second business was also targeted.
Dale told the County Press: "It is absolutely and utterly disgusting — especially at this time when the nation is remembering those who fought and died during the D-Day landings.
"It is such a totally disrespectful act. I really don't understand the mentality of some people.
"Anyone who could do this is absolute scum — there's no other way of describing them. What can you do with people like that?"
As the County Press previously reported, a spokesperson for Leslie's Hyundai said a wooden door was kicked in and seven cars were vandalised, across the valet bay and forecourt.
A staff member’s car had a hole drilled into its lock and, at a neighbouring business, there was an office break-in, and car keys were stolen.
One vehicle was taken while another was abandoned nearby.
“One car was a customer’s, which came in last night because it was running bad. They obviously worked that out, abandoned it, and took the other," a spokesperson said.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: "We are investigating a burglary which occurred at Leslies Hyundai in College Close, Sandown.
"It’s reported that some time overnight, into the early hours of this morning, the premises was broken into.
"A number of vehicles were damaged and spray painted.
"Enquiries remain ongoing."
The Veteran's Dale Hillier said: "I would support the idea of bringing back National Service. It may give younger people some discipline, some purpose in life and some pride in our nation, with an understanding of the sacrifices made by those who fought and died in two world wars and other conflicts.
"At this time, all I feel is utter disgust."
