A man had to be pulled from the water following a major search in Sandown on the Isle of Wight overnight.

Police, coastguard and RNLI teams were alerted to the seafront last night.

Concerns were raised for the welfare of a man.

HM Coastguard was deployed, dispatching a helicopter, boats and personnel to search the area on foot.

Flares were also used.

Police officers scoured the area on foot and used a drone with heat sensors, in an attempt to locate the man.

After quite some time, police said he was located in the water.

For the force, Sgt Radford, said: "I expect he was quite cold as the sea temperature was 16c.

"Thankfully the incident was brought to a safe conclusion."

He added: "Big thanks to the coastguard for their quick response. They always get out so fast to any area around the Island and it's amazing to see them in action.

"The RNLI and other services also are just as epic and I think it takes a special person to put themselves at risk to rescue others at sea."
