Isle of Wight firefighters were called to tackle a bin lorry fire in Lake this morning (Wednesday, June 5).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to reports of a vehicle fire on Hildyards Crescent at around 10am.

On-call crews from Shanklin and Ryde were quickly on the scene and found smoke coming from the bin lorry's cardboard compartment.

Hose reel jets were used to dampen down the contents.

Thermal imaging cameras were used to monitor the fire as the crews removed the contents of the vehicle onto the road before putting out the flames.

Firefighters left the scene at 11.22am as the waste company arranged to clear the road.

IW Council has been contacted for a statement.
