A 'much-needed' secure dog walking field on the Isle of Wight opened for the first time today (Saturday).

Plans for Maddie's Meadow on land off Bathingbourne Lane, near Hale Common, were approved by the Isle of Wight Council in January.

Surrounded by hedges and deer fencing, the two acre paddock is designed to allow furry, four-legged friends to be let off their lead in a safe and secure environment.

The business, run by Jenny Ware, operates using a booking system and offers 50 minute slots at a cost of £12.

A maximum of six dogs are allowed in the field at any one time and a car park is also on site, with space for three cars.

It was the second time proposals for the business had been submitted - the first application, for a site in nearby Newchurch, was refused.

At the time, neighbours raised concerns about a lack of privacy and peace, as well as an increase in noise disturbance and nuisance.

Plans for the Bathingbourne site were well supported, with many commenting how a secure dog walking facility was 'desperately needed' in the area.

Maddie's Meadow is open 7am to 8pm, seven days a week.
