An Isle of Wight lifeboat station will be the focus of a week-long programme of fun and educational activities starting today (Saturday, May 25).
Bembridge Lifeboat Station’s popular annual ‘Yellow Welly Week’ free event has returned for the May half-term.
Visitors can enjoy a range of fun activities for youngsters at the lifeboat station, from dressing up in junior lifeboat crew kit to the line-throwing and welly-wanging competitions.
On Monday (May 27), a ‘D’ class inshore lifeboat will be on display at the annual Bembridge Street Fair, giving youngsters a chance to go aboard and have their photos taken in lifeboat kit.
The offshore boathouse will be open every day from 11am to 3.45pm for the public to view the all-weather lifeboat at close quarters and join in the activities.
During the week, there will also be a range of activities offering help and advice to all uses of the marine environment, from lifejacket ‘clinics’ to information on coastal walking, fishing, kayaking, beach safety and more.
The evening training launch of the all-weather lifeboat is scheduled for Tuesday (May 28) at 7pm, which may be viewed from the offshore boathouse.
There will also be a chance to ‘meet the crew’, after which hog dogs and drinks will be served at the ‘sausage sizzle’ after the launch.
All proceeds for the events and donations throughout the week will support Bembridge’s lifeboats, helping to save lives at sea.
The Yellow Welly Week ends on Sunday, June 2.
