The Isle of Wight has been marking national Mental health Awareness Week, which ran from Monday, May 13 to Friday, May 17.

Among those using the week to make positive strides towards tackling mental health challenges were Maddy Hayes and Ross McMahon.

On Saturday, July 6, they will take on their first ever ultra marathon: The 50km Serpent Trail.

Launching their fundraising page this week, the pair said it will be their longest run ever, along a trail that will take them through the South Downs National Park.

They will be running in memory of their friend Rob, himself a keen runner and 'a lovely, exceptionally kind, fantastically supportive and wonderfully generous soul' who will be 'greatly missed'.

Rob died last month and Ross and Maddy say their Tuesday and Sunday runs will not be the same without him.

They are raising money for PAPYRUS (Prevention of Young Suicide), via THIS JUSTGIVING link, which you can click to donate  (https://www.justgiving.com/page/ultraforrob)

At Priory School, in Whippingham, daily events were planned,  including practising mindfulness and taking part in Wear it Green Day. There were also Singing for Wellbeing sessions, led by music teacher, Mr Lynch, and a rendition of Pharrell Williams's Happy.

Meanwhile, Isle of Wight Marathon runners are raising money for the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, and launched their plans during the awareness week.

The Love Running Tuesday Nighters meet weekly, organised by Jo Randall, from Love Running in Newport.

“Running is well documented to aid good mental health, because it offers you head-space, exercise, companionship and social contact. We also have volunteer listeners in the group every week, in case a member wants to chat," she said.

The Tuesday Nighters will include the Isle of Wight Youth Trust among their good causes at the Isle of Wight Marathon, on October 6.

The theme for this year's awareness week was Movement: Moving more for our mental health.

Mental Health Awareness Week has been marked since 2001.

It aims to 'bring together the UK to focus on getting good mental health.'
