ROADWORKS serving East Cowes has led to massive traffic snarl-ups of Sunday traffic.

Delays on Whippingham Road near East Cowes and its approaches today (Sunday) are being caused by surface dressing works by Island Roads.

The effect has been major on traffic feeding from and to East Cowes — the main gateway to the Isle of Wight.

Traffic queues start from Island Harbour on Fairlee Road, towards East Cowes, and from Osborne House towards Whippingham.

The work is required to ensure Whippingham Road maintains safe and skid resistant, says Island Roads.

Also, delays are inevitable — particularly given the absence of any alternative routes into East Cowes — the company has added.

Traffic has since been jammed on the Whippingham Road since works began at 8am this morning (Sunday).

Southern Vectis buses using the route has experienced delays of around 30 minutes, with connections with Red Funnel ferries likely to be affected.

The Floating Bridge between East Cowes and West Cowes is currently operational.
