From acts of bravery and dedication, to a tenacious attitude towards investigating offences on the Island and assisting victims of serious and violent crime, members of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary were recognised at the Isle of Wight Area Commander’s Awards, held at Newport Congregational Church recently.
Among the award recipients were two Isle of Wight police detectives whose important work led to convictions.
DS Mick Redfern and DC Amy Hicks — both members of the Isle of Wight Area Crime Team (ACT) — were recognised for their "exceptional contributions to police investigations".
Mick, who previously worked for Leicestershire Police, was handed his award, a Chief Superintendent’s Certificate, for his work on an investigation into the stabbing of a woman in Leicestershire.
The efforts of the investigation team, led by Mick, who transferred to the Island in 2022, resulted in the arrest and jailing of the attackers.
Amy was awarded the Area Commander’s Certificate, for her excellent and thorough investigative work in identifying a suspect, who was subsequently charged for a series of crimes, which included burglary and stealing cars.
The individual in question was charged with 18 further offences and is due to be sentenced later this month.
PC Danni Tosdevin was awarded the Area Commander’s Certificate, for her efforts in arresting and securing charges against a repeat burglar in Ryde.
Danni helped identify and arrest a man who committed multiple burglaries, criminal damage and carrying a bladed article and who posed a threat to local businesses, residents and the local press.
Julian Wadsworth, a community resilience co-ordinator for Community Action Isle of Wight, received the same accolade for his efforts to reduce anti-social behaviour in the Sandown Bay area, while working with the South Wight Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) as part of Operation Spider.
PCSO Jackie May, of the South Wight NPT, was presented the Going the Extra Mile Award.
Jackie, who has been part of the police service 17 years, was recognised for her "unswerving dedication to her role, her team and her beat", which included her response to urgent matters when off duty.
