A fire in which an elderly man died from his injuries has been deemed accidental.

Following the initial investigation, the fire at Sandford, was most likely caused by fabric coming into close contact with an electric heater, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has revealed.

They said the fire has been deemed accidental.

A man in his 90s was seriously injured with burns and later died in hospital.

Police are preparing a file for the Island coroner. 

A spokesperson for HIWFRS said today: “We were alerted to a fire at a property on Shanklin Road, Godshill, at 1.58am on Sunday.

“Following the initial investigation, the fire, which is deemed to be accidental, was most likely caused by fabric coming into close contact with an electric heater.”

Crews from Shanklin, Newport and Cowes attended the fire, and used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet.

Two occupants of the house were provided immediate medical support.

Tributes have been left on the County Press's Facebook page since the fire.
