An Isle of Wight driver admitted consuming ‘cannabis eatables’ but said he would rather go to court than cooperate with a drug test.

David Sanders, of The Rogers, Shanklin, previously denied failing to provide a specimen for analysis but changed his plea to guilty at the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 9.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said police had received reports of a yellow Ford van driving at speed on Brading Road in Ryde at 7.45pm on October 17 last year.

Ms Miller told the court officers found the vehicle and pulled it over, with the driver, Sanders, appearing to be ‘annoyed and erratic’.

The 47-year-old informed police he had consumed ‘cannabis eatables’ and in a previous similar situation was tested negative by officers.

For this reason, he refused to cooperate with a roadside DrugWipe test, the court heard.

Ms Miller said Sanders later refused a blood test at Newport Police Station, telling officers: “I would rather go to court; it is just my right.”

Michael McGoldrick, defending, said his client was unrepresented at his previous hearing where he pleaded not guilty, but realised he had no defence and wanted to change his plea.

Mr McGoldrick requested magistrates to consider a pre-sentence report, to which they agreed.

Sanders was handed an interim driving disqualification and will return to court for sentencing on May 28.
