AN ISLE of Wight woman who trespassed on railway lines for around two hours, evading police and paramedics, has been sentenced.

Jade Sandells, of Ryde Esplanade, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday, April 5.

At a previous hearing, the 26-year-old admitted trespassing and intentionally causing a public nuisance, in Ryde, on February 1.

The court heard the railway line between Ryde Esplanade and St John's Station had to be turned off and trains cancelled, costing Island Line nearly £1,000.

Emergency services responded to a concern for welfare report at the Esplanade at around 3.45pm, said Lauren Stone, prosecuting.

Police were told by a member of train staff that Sandells had been "on and off the tracks".

The court heard how she evaded police and paramedics, ran off multiple times, and when officers eventually caught up with her, she had been on the tracks for approximately two hours.

A train employee told police four trains had to be cancelled and a bus replacement service had to be put on.

Rachel Wigley, defending, said Sandells suffered with several mental health issues and had made efforts to improve her wellbeing since the incident.

Sandells was made subject of an 18-month community order, to include 25 rehabilitation days and 80 hours of unpaid work.

She was ordered to pay £400 compensation to Island Line.
