The Isle of Wight has grappled with a spate of landslides and cliff collapses since the devastating incident at Leeson Road in Bonchurch last December.

We have delved into our extensive County Press coverage of coastal events and put together a timeline detailing all of the Island's incidents since the Bonchurch landslide.

Here is the Isle of Wight landslide and cliff fall timeline so far in 2024.


Bonchurch

On the evening of Sunday, December 10, 2023, around 20 properties were evacuated, gardens collapsed, and the Smuggler's Haven Tea Gardens was left ‘hanging on’ following a large landslip.

Most residents since moved back home, but Ventnor’s Leeson Road has remained  closed ever since.

January 2024

Luccombe

On Tuesday, January 2, a landslip occurred at the Western end of Shanklin Beach in Luccombe, which entirely covered the beach at the far end of the bay.


Fort Albert

In a significant landslide which is understood to have happened during the first week of 2024, tonnes of rubble and an old gun turret came crashing down a cliff at Fort Albert, at the eastern end of Colwell Bay.


Castlehaven Lane, Niton

As reported on Sunday, January 14, a walking route around Castlehaven Lane near Niton was blocked after part of the footpath slipped.


February 2024

Rylstone Gardens, Shanklin

On Saturday, February 10, Rylstone Gardens and the nearby Fisherman’s Cottage pub were evacuated after ground movement and cracks, one 3m in length and 8 inches wide, formed within half an hour on the cliff top in Shanklin.


Totland Promenade

The public was warned to avoid Totland Promenade after a large landslide on the evening of Thursday, February 22, which left rock and soil strewn across the sea wall and beach just north of Totland Pier.

A further section of the promenade, between the Waterfront pub and Widdick Chine, was also closed off following the discovery of voids beneath the path.


Gills Cliff Road, Ventnor

A set of traffic lights were wiped out on Gills Cliff Road after rocks and debris came tumbling down overnight on Thursday, February 22.


Zig Zag Road, Ventnor

On Friday, February 23, Zig Zag Road was closed following reports of a small landslip which wiped out a retaining wall below Ocean View Road, which required studies to be carried out by Island building experts.

The collapse itself was said to have happened earlier in January, and the road reopened following council checks.


Shanklin to Sandown Promenade

A landslip overnight on Sunday, February 25, completely blocked the steps connecting Littlestairs Road and the clifftop footpath with the Sandown to Shanklin promenade.


Fort Victoria Country Park

Cracks started to appear in a coastal path at Fort Victoria around Tuesday, February 27, following significant land movement and a landslide below Hurst Castle Viewpoint.


March 2024

Colwell Bay

Reported on Monday, March 4, several cliff falls sent tonnes of land crashing down onto the beach at Colwell Bay, including near the Brambles Chine steps.


St Lawrence

Overnight on Friday, March 8, the land below Undercliff Drive moved, leading to cracks appearing on Old Park Road and a driveway on Hunts Road sinking.

The landslip is understood to have affected two properties and has prompted a ‘stay away’ warning from the IW Council, with a section of Old Park Road closed.


Bembridge

Another landslip last week closed a coastal footpath between Forelands Field Road and Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park in Bembridge.

Islander Andrew Hatch took a picture (above) of the damage while out walking his dog, Dotty.


Atherfield Point

First reported by the County Press yesterday (Thursday, March 21), a large landslip at Atherfield Point near Military Road last week led to the closure of the beach and reports of cracks and holes as deep as 40ft appearing in the clifftop above.

Military Road, Compton and Brook

Military Road and the Brook and Compton areas have been continuously under threat of cliff falls this year, with the most notable being a landslip at Whale Chine, another at Brook and concerns over a void at the clifftop near Freshwater Bay.
