A CYCLING group with a vision of making young cyclists safe on the Isle of Wight roads, launched their new Kidical Mass initiative with a big ride out on the streets of Newport last weekend.
Organised by CycleWight, around 40 cyclists — which included the Island's youngest, at just three years old — took to the county town's streets for a leisurely ride on Saturday morning.
Shoppers were surprised to see the cavalcade of cyclists weaving their way through Newport's central streets.
Cyclists ranged in age, from toddlers to adults, with some even hitching a ride on their parents' bikes.
But CycleWight's ultimate goal is to encourage more young people to cycle independently and safely.
Careful planning by CycleWight’s marshals ensured the group stayed together along the route, which contributed to the positive atmosphere on Newport's roads.
Literally giving the event a more upbeat tempo, three e-cargobikes from Island company, Keert, equipped with speakers, joined the group — turning the heads of passers-by with their music.
To ensure there were no hindrances to motorists and fellow cyclists, the Island police sent a PCSO to monitor the event.
CycleWight said Kidical Mass proved a success, with hopes it was first of a series of similar events held across other Island towns.
