Isle of Wight communities are being urged to support smokers in their quest to quit.
Over 1,000 Island residents are annually hospitalised due to smoking, and a recent national No Smoking Day annual event promoted quitting attempts and provided comprehensive guidance to those determined to abandon tobacco.
Simon Bryant, the Island's director of public health, said: "Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health. It’s never too late to quit smoking. When you stop smoking, there are almost immediate improvements to your health."
Since its inception in 1984, No Smoking Day has significantly contributed to a two-thirds drop in UK-wide smoking rates, aligning with a broader goal of a smoke-free nation by 2030.
Councillor Debbie Andre, cabinet member for public health, said: "There is a wide range of support for those wishing to quit, so you’re not on your own and getting expert support from your local stop smoking services means you’re three times as likely to quit for good."
This year's campaign message is clear: quitting is never late, health improvements manifest almost immediately after cessation, assistance makes quitting easier, and numerous support options are available.
