A man in his 20s has been arrested following a large police response to an alleged attempted robbery on the Isle of Wight this lunchtime (Monday, March 11).

Police were called at around 1.30pm to reports that a man had been threatened in Shanklin and 'demands were made for money'.

The County Press understands four police cars and four vans were sent to Atherley Road.

Shortly before 2pm, officers arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of attempted robbery.

He remains in police custody at this time. 

Police believe the parties said to have been involved are known to each other.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: "The investigation is in the very early stages and enquiries remain ongoing."


UPDATE (MARCH 12):

The 25-year-old man has been released with no further action being taken.

A spokesperson said: "Following enquiries, and based on the evidence available to police at this time, this incident has now been filed."
