The opening of the Isle of Wight hospital's new look children's emergency department has suffered a setback after 'unexpected issues' were found.
The unit was due to open a few weeks ago, but a decision was made to delay.
Two problems were discovered as the first phase of St Mary's Hospital's new emergency care floor approached completion, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said.
The trust said the issues were to do with ventilation units and drainage.
Joe Smyth, chief officer for the trust told the County Press: “Safety is always our priority.
"We chose to delay the opening of the new unit while we rectify two issues that unexpectedly arose."
The changes are due to be completed next week, he said.
If all goes to plan, the improved area will open by the end of March.
Mr Smyth added: "The area will include a dedicated ambulance entrance for children and a new waiting room layout which will improve patient safety at night.
"We would like to thank Islanders for their patience while this work continues.”
While work has been carried out, traffic restrictions have been in place at the front of the hospital meaning drivers have been unable to use the site as a through route.
